oldest continuously settled city in the United States, seat (1822) of St. Johns county, northeastern Florida, about 40 miles (65 km) southeast of Jacksonville.
According to Augustine, the earth was brought
into existence ex nihilo by a perfectly good and just God, who created man.
Here are some highlights:
Significance: Founded in 1565 by Spanish explorers, it’s the oldest continuously
inhabited European-established settlement in the contiguous United States.
Attractions: The city’s historic heart is home to the Castillo de San Marcos, a
17th-century Spanish stone fortress with views of the St. Augustine Inlet.
Cultural Heritage: St. Augustine’s rich heritage is reflected in its museums, historic
sites like the Lightner Museum, and the Flagler College, known for its Spanish
Renaissance architecture.
Recreational Activities: Visitors can enjoy the beautiful beaches, the iconic St. Augustine
Lighthouse, and the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park.
St. Augustine was the first Spanish settlement
that was successfully established in Florida. The reason the city is a tourist
destination now is thanks to Henry Flagler. St. Augustine has the oldest wooden
schoolhouse.
Two cities according to St. Augustine: Philosophical/theological doctrine is couched in terms of the “two cities:” Rome (or the new Babylon), which symbolizes all that is worldly, and Jerusalem (the city of heaven), which symbolizes the Christian community.
St. Augustine is extremely walkable with
friendly and inviting spaces in the Old City. Being a popular town does have
its disadvantages for motoring travelers.π✨
